JUGGERNAUT NETS WIN AT FISHING FOR MIRACLES!
Harvey’s 38.84 Biggest Fish of Charleston Event

By John Zalud

Charleston, South Carolina—Bert Harvey used Thursday to pre-fish an area 35 miles southeast of the jetties. Friday morning he checked out for the Fishing For Miracles Tournament and set a course in his Yamaha powered Contender, Juggernaut, back to the same spot in 80 feet of water. “Bait was really easy to come by and this area had fish,” said Harvey who fished with A.C. Harvey, David Morris, and Jim Roberts. “We actually found three kings but the big one came at 12:45 enticed by a pogy on a medium flat line. David picked up the rod and we went to work. A short time later, thanks to the gaff skills of Jim, we had her in the boat and believed that this fish would get us into the top ten.” When the event came to an end the Juggernaut name rested in the number one spot on the event’s leaderboard. The $25,000 top prize was theirs. This fish should get the Juggernaut to the Nationals in November! Jack and Eren Bracewell fished their 23' Yamaha powered Contender, Eren’s Addiction Too, into second place with a 35.93. “We ran 21 miles south to the Shady Grady Hole which sits in 53 feet of water,” said a jubilant Bracewell. “A local friend of mine said this was the place so we went.” Bracewell continued, “She finally hit a blue runner in our prop wash after skying three times. She took no time to get to the boat thanks to a good hook set with our Eagle Claw hooks.” The duo caught four other kings. This was the Bracewell’s best finish after four years of competitive fishing. They also picked up bonus money for being the top Class of 23 boat and Eren won Top Lady honors. I’d say that was a very good weekend!

Stephen Budge and his Yamaha powered Triton team of Jimmy Huber, Sean Murphy, and Brian Hart, caught just one fish this weekend, but it was enough to capture third. The stockbroker piloted the Rough Life south ten miles from Charleston and went to work in 43 feet of water. “We sent a mullet down 35 feet and were rewarded with a strike,” said Budge. “Murphy worked the rod while Huber waited to set the gaff.” Budge won the Savannah tournament in ’06 and now has a third place finish in South Carolina’s biggest event. That sure looks good on a resume. After a local picked up fourth, SKA member David Karwaki scaled a 33.66 to round out the top five. “We fished in 42 feet of water fifteen miles east,” said the Code Red Captain. “We pre-fished this area and it looked real good. About ten o’clock we put out a double pogy rig and in no time she was on.” Karwacki fought the king to gaff while Anthony Audesey and Allen Dixon did the fish on chores. “We released three others during the weekend,” the first year SKA Glynn County firefighter added. “This was our best finish.”

Mikey Likes It is a great team and often finds a spot on the leaderboard. This weekend was no different. The Hubbard’s, Michael, Mike, and Carolyn, kept their Yamaha powered Hydra Sports right at home, electing to fish the Charleston Jetties—one of those spots that usually produces a good king. Chalk up another good decision. “We hooked up at 10:45,” said Michael, the team’s Captain. “She hit a long lined pogy while we were anchored in 52 feet of water.” The fish went 32.16 on the tournament’s scale, which gave the Hubbard’s a sixth place finish. David Perry, Ralph Justice, and Jay Simms rounded out the top ten aboard the Mercury powered Triton, MSC. (MSC, in case you didn’t know, stands for Marine Service Center).

Perry has been kicking around this sport for years and has to be regarded one of the best in the country. Certainly in his neck of the woods. This event the team scaled a 31.67. The 11th, 12th,  and 14th places also read like a who’s who. Ralph Turner’s Team Winners World picked up a 31.36 while Gary Smith’s 30.72 caught on Daddy’s Money wasn’t far behind. Then Andy Nettles scaled a nice 29.81 on Solid Surface.

South Carolina has become a very tough Division to qualify in. You have to be on top of your game and make smart choices of where to drop that hook if you expect to end on top. In all the years the SKA has been involved with the Miracles Tournament, this was by far their best ever. Congratulations to all who fished and to the tournament staff.
