To Da Hub Lands a 33.60 to Win Halfmoon… Tie-One-On Takes Lead in Division Four
by Ian Warner

Captain Jimmy Roberts and the crew of Tu Da Hub nailed the biggest king the first weekend of June at Halfmoon’s Kingfish Klash, a 33.60-pounder to take top honors and the $10,000 prize. Right on their tail was Tie-One-On, with a 32.03 taking second and a 30.90 aboard No Mercy II, who took third for the tournament. While the seas were a choppy 3- to 5-feet, over 100 boats took advantage of this well-run tournament and their chance at the $10,000 grand prize.

“We flipped a coin to decide to go to the J buoy or Gray’s Reef,” started Captain Roberts, “and it was the J buoy.” Robert, Joe Greenwood, Mitchell Cason and Alan Daniels headed the 26’ Yamaha powered Mako southeast and made the 40-mile run to their spot. “We had released several kings in the morning,” said Roberts, “then at 1:30 we had a double hook-up, one small one and our tournament winner.” The big king hit a pogie on a long line being trolled in 35 feet of water. Joe Greenwood quickly angled the big girl in, and the team was on the way to the scales to earn their check to take home to Richmond Hill, GA.

Second place went to the Tie-One-On team and Captain Todd Boyer from Savannah, GA with a 32.03-pound king. “With the seas being 3- to 5-foot we decided to go to the Brunswick Ship Channel, a spot we’ve fished before,” stated Boyer, “but all we could find was a lot of little kings.” Trolling their 27’ Yamaha powered Contender in 40 feet of water the team finally got some good action at 3:00 p.m. “Our pogie on a long line hooked up. After a 20-minute fight we put her in the bag and went to the scale,” smiled Boyer. This fish positions Tie-One-On in first place divisionally with a two-pound lead.

John Lokey Captained the No Mercy II team to third on the strength of their 30.90-pound king mackerel. Captain Lokey, John Hall and Ike Mauldem “went to a spot about two miles northeast of Gray’s Reef where I’ve fished before,” reported Lokey. The team caught several small kings throughout the morning, but the action heated up at 2 p.m. fishing in 63 feet of water. “John Hall was bringing in a line to check it and it was nailed,” smiled Lokey. That lucky pogie would prove to be worth a check for five grand and third place honors, as well as putting the team in third for Division 4 heading to fish their home waters of Brunswick, GA.

Sea Ducer had a great day’s fishing, nailing a 28.82 for fourth place overall, Top Lady Angler Honors and Top Junior Angler honors. “My son, Rhett, was the appointed angler for the day,” smiled Todd, “and he told me, ‘Dad, I’m going to get us a big one!’” The team, consisting of Captain Veal, Kelly, Rhett and Dillon Veal, Tom Whittingslow and Mitch Matthews, headed their Yamaha powered Contender south and made a 120-mile run for their fish. “Our first bite was a 70-pound wahoo,” reported Todd, “we thought we had the man!” The team had a slow morning, but at 2:00 trolling in 63 feet of water Rhett yelled “Fish on!” and grabbed the flat line rod and made short work of their king. “This is Rhett’s fourth year fishing with my wife, his brother Dillon, and I,” stated Todd, all with Rhett just turning nine this June.

Rounding out the top five is Team Key Largo who pulled in a 28-pounder. Captain Stan Kane, Jason Christner and Lee Bennett fish a 25’ Yamaha powered Key Largo out of Hinesville, GA. “With the good fishing last weekend at Sapelo we decided to go back to the same spot,” stated Kane. The team ran about 43 miles southeast to a good live bottom spot but found only a few small kings during the morning’s fishing. Finally at 1:30 fishing in 63 feet of water a pogie set at 45-foot on the downrigger went off. A quick battle later and the team put her in the bag and headed back to the scales. After their finish at Sapelo, this places Team Key Largo at just over two pounds away from leading this division heading into tournament three.

Next in line was Irrigator, a 32’ Yamaha powered Regulator, Captained by Mark Hoxie. Captain Hoxie and his team pulled in a 27.87 for a sixth place victory to take home to Richmond, Hill, GA. Seventh went to Crawfish and Captain Kenny Crawford with a 27.78-pounder. Crawford, Bill Bazemore, Doreen Fletcher and Chris Bazemore fish a 31’ Yamaha powered Contender from Fernandina Beach, FL.

Sea-N-Double from Mitchell, GA took eighth place with a 25.55-pound king. Captain Jim Mason, Tim and Billy Mason, Ricky Williams and Brad Hooks landed the king aboard their 23’ Mercury powered Pro-Line. Captain Jimmy and Henry Wheeler got the next spot with a 25.39 aboard Plumbers Paradise. Fishing a 26’ Yamaha powered Hydra-Sports boat, this team earned ninth to take home to St. Simons Island, GA.

Rounding out the top ten is Double J and Captain J. T. Gregory. Hailing from Eatonton, GA, Captain Gregory, Bob Barnette, Rusty Rogers and Scott Reynolds fished their 36’ Yamaha powered Contender to victory with a 25.39-pound mack. Next in line is Optimism and Captain Hinley who landed a 24.97.

Fishing a 26’ Yamaha powered Mako, Captain Ken Murray and Backlash took 12th with a 24.92. Next in line was the 23’ Mercury powered Fountain Big Fishin’ Captained by Scott A. Harding with a 23.87-pounder. Broke Out, a 23’ Johnson powered Hydra-Sports, took 14th for Captain Kyle Williams with a 23.72. Finally Goin’ Deep rounds out the top 15 for Captain Mike Zabarac with a 22.65-pound mack aboard his 31’ Contender powered Yamaha.

With Sea Ducer grabbing both Top Lady Angler and Top Junior Angler Honors, second place for the Juniors fell to Miles Patterson of the Shore Thing, who pulled in a 22.45-pounder. Third place Junior Angler was Hunter Prescott with a 20.68 aboard King Seeker.

First place in the Class of 23’ went to Captain Steve Miller and the Miller Time with their 28.05-pounder. Fishing a 23’ Yamaha powered Contender, Captain Miller and Jason Singleton had done their research for this tournament. “We had gotten a few good fish last week at the J buoy pre-fishing so we gave it a shot. We wanted to go deep but the seas just wouldn’t let us,” reported Miller. Like most teams they had a few small fish hook-up in the morning, with the big bite later in the day. Fishing in 60 feet of water their pogie in the prop wash was hit at 1:45. “We put her in the bag and were happy with our decision,’ smiled Miller. Their 28-pounder was the fifth largest fish and landed the team in the money by leading the Class boats to earn a $1,500 check to take home to Midway, GA.

Second place in the Class of 23’ went to Color of Money and Captain Bohannon with a 27.15-pounder. Fraid Knot rounds out the top three with Captain Holley and a 26.71-pound king.
