About ProFinder Charts, LLC

I built and managed golf courses for nearly 30 years in the Carolinas. Many anglers may have played some of my courses -- Marsh Harbour, The Cape, Buck Creek, or Keowee Key.

Back in the late 90's, I recognized we had over-built the market. I was tired, and was concerned about having a little time for my 2 daughters (nor fishing), so I decided to retire from golf. I promised myself I would fish more, and spend more time with my kids -- hopefully both at the same time. I did not have a clue as to what else I might do to make a living.

When I started spending more time on the water, I noticed I could not purchase what I considered a good fishing chart. Well, with my experience with maps, I started making my own. Next thing you know, people were asking for me to make charts for other areas. I found it to be a lot of fun, and made enough money with my new hobby to support my fishing habit.

One day, Howard Poe called to tell me a friend of his wanted to talk about some golf ideas. I met Tony Woodell at his Ocean Isle home and we sat down at a table under his house and enjoyed the sea breeze and conversation. His son Hunter, about 12 years old at the time, sat down at the table beside us and was studying one of my charts.

When Tony learned that I was making these new "ProFinder Charts", he immediately expressed his desire to become involved. We soon became partners, and decided to go expanding the territory.

I was fortunate to land the account with the Bass Pro Shops in Myrtle Beach right when they were opening this new facility. Next thing you know, they put our charts in other Bass Pro locations down to Islamorada, Fla.

One day, Don Ewing told me he wanted to introduce me to Jack and Deona Holmes. A week or so later, Don called me to say the Holmes were passing through our area on the way back to St. Augustine. I drove over to Don's island home right as Jack was pulling in. It was obvious they were both tired and in a hurry. Realizing that talking to a "salesman" was the last thing they wanted to do, I simply explained that I had something for them to look at that would require 30 seconds of their time. I remember telling Jack that if he was not interested, John McWhite would never bother him again. A new friendship was born; on that we value today!

Now we had the SKA behind us, and the exposure from the Bass Pro Shops. It was time to expand our thinking. Both Tony and I knew how difficult (and time consuming) it was to enter waypoints into a GPS plotter. We started looking into ways to get the data to a CD, and how to write the data to multiple type formats. Each brand talks a different language.

Our research showed the industry was leaning towards using "digital memory cards" for media device on new units. We quickly scrapped the CD idea and began our work on ways to put our waypoints data on these various data cards. It took us nearly 2 years to figure it all out and perfect it, but here we are today.
