South Atlantic Council votes NO on catch shares

March 11 2011 -

Dear Jack ,
South Atlantic Council votes NO on catch shares
This just in from Bill Kelly-

To All Concerned:

A few moments ago, George Geiger (FL) Sn/Gr Committee made a motion seconded by Ben Hartig (FL) as follows: “Motion to terminate all work relating to development of catch shares in Amendment 21”.

Abstained (1) - Crabtree
Against - Currin (3), Cupka, Phillips
For (9) - All Others

Passage of the motion is an unprecedented move against the development of catch shares, one of the most controversial fisheries management programs currently in use in the United States. Committee discussion of the motion cited the overwhelming rejection of the catch shares concept by commercial, for-hire and recreational fishermen in the Southeastern states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. This action does not remove catch shares from the NOAA arsenal of management tools but does make it clear to the federal management agency that catch shares are not embraced in all geographical areas or in the management of all species of fish.

Rejection of the catch share concept was exceptionally clear in spirited public comment lasting from 10:45 AM this morning until 1:15 PM this afternoon at the Conference Center meeting of the SAFMC at Sea Palms Resort, St. Simons Island, GA. The full council is expected to pass the motion later today or tomorrow before their adjournment.
