Thank you for contacting me regarding Representative Jones’ amendment to the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011 (H.R. 1). As your Senator, I appreciate your advocacy on this important issue and for allowing me the opportunity to respond.
I understand your position on catch shares. In tough economic times, it is imperative that we carefully review programs of this nature to ensure that they accomplish their original goals without jeopardizing the livelihoods of Florida fishermen.
Representative Jones’ amendment will ensure that the funding for programs like catch share programs is eliminated. The fishing industry is a major part of Florida’s economy and it is important to maintain the industry’s vitality. I will keep your views and concerns in mind as I carefully consider this issue.
