2 TV interviews on NOAA and the 2/25/2011 Fishermen’s Rally

February 17 2011 -

Last night Congressman Jones filed an anti-catch shares amendment to H.R. 1 – the Fiscal Year 2011 Continuing Resolution which will fund the federal government through the rest of Fiscal Year 2011 (i.e. September 30, 2011). The amendment has been printed in the Congressional Record and is #548. A copy is attached. The amendment would prohibit NOAA from spending any money on the development and approval of new catch share programs in fisheries under the jurisdiction of the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic and New England Fishery Management . It does NOT affect anything on the West Coast or Alaska. This amendment could come up for House floor consideration, and potentially a vote, this evening or tomorrow. Please contact your member of Congress and urge them to support Jones Amendment #548 to block funding for catch shares.

In addition:
As an FYI, Congressman Jones has filed an amendment (#207) that would prohibit NOAA from using funds from the Asset Forfeiture Fund (AFF) to pay the salaries of ALJs who adjudicate cases against fishermen. A copy is attached for your review. Congressman Jones believes strongly that the judges who decide cases against fishermen should not be paid with the fines and penalties they levy on fishermen; that’s a fundamental conflict of interest. This could come up tonight or tomorrow. Any support you could offer would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
