Mark says, “...the entire Intrepid staff has been incredibly professional and easy to work with. The custom design options on the Intrepid are something that has blown me away! I had a million questions, but each one has been answered quickly and precisely.”

Catch a King Over 74.10 pounds and Take Home $100,000!

by Christine Rodenbaugh

Back in 2009, history was made right here in Biloxi. The Ocean Isle Fishing Center team of Brant, Barrett, and Rube McMullan broke the record with a 74.10-pound kingfish. That fish gives the North Carolina team bragging rights to the biggest king ever weighed in SKA competition and the biggest two-fish aggregate ever weighed in any SKA event including National Championships. Paired with a nice 44.03, their aggregate was 118.13 pounds.

This year, if your team weighs a fish heavier than 74.10 pounds in the Nationals tournament, you’ll be taking home $100,000! The McMullans are a very experienced fishing team and in 2009 they used their knowledge to find the tournament winner. The team went looking for bait and found “a huge school of menhaden so tightly wrapped they were forming a funnel at their center. Birds were working the school hard,” “As she came in the boat we were in awe. It was the biggest king we had ever seen” said Brant. After netting some fresh pogies, the team went to work. At first they only caught teenagers. When they finally got a good fish on, a hammerhead took half of it. Undaunted the team fished on. And their tenacity paid off. With just twenty minutes left on the clock before they had to leave to make the 5:30 deadline for check-in, Barrett sent a pogy down rigged with a Yee Haw Fish Call and set it at forty feet.

Minutes later Barrett was hooked up with Brant and Rube still tending to other lines in the water. After all, time was running out and Barrett had things under control. “That fish made one huge run then it was just winding him in, but it seemed a long time,” Barrett explained. “When she came up and I saw the head, I hollered, ‘Get the gaff!’”

“As she came in the boat we were in awe. It was the biggest king we had ever seen,” said Brant. “We put her in the bag and headed north at forty-five miles per hour knowing we had a humongous king and a deadline to meet.”

Jack Holmes believes there is another big girl out in these waters and that the record can definitely be broken. “Teams fishing the Nationals have what it takes to break this record,” says Jack. “They just have to combine their experience with instinct and a bit of Lady Luck to make it happen.”
