Dellane’s 96.46 Aggregate Tops 3rd Leg of the Yamaha Professional Kingfish Tour in Fourchon, LA

By Jack Holmes

Fourchon, Louisiana—Ken Dellane and his team of Chad Hickman, Stevie Dellane, and Chris Terry, fishing the ProMarineUSA.com/Kingpin, won their second Yamaha Professional Kingfish tour event this year. Hot off a big win in Jensen Beach, Dellane and company scaled a 43.23 on day one then came back on day two with the biggest king mackerel of the event, a 53.23. Their combined score of 96.46 brought the team to within six hundred points of the lead. Their performance in the season opener in Sarasota was not their best, but they’ve made steady headway since then. If they do well in Little River, then they should be in a great position to win it all.

Usually at this time of the year we pay more attention to overall standing and focus on who's moving forward plus the chase itself. In Fourchon however, it was no secret that virtually all teams checked out and headed at least a hundred miles to the west and found the fish in virtually the same areas that were fished in 2009. Bait was more than plentiful and they were also in deep enough waters to find Wahoo and Cobia for the local event. One competitor told me that this is the best tournament of the season because of the abundance of fish. Many of the teams come for the whole week. Ron Mitchell told me they carried home four Yellowfin tunas, several Wahoo, and like everyone else as much snapper as regulations permit.

Andre Moore, his wife Kim, Josh Herren, and John Strudel, caught a 41.22 on day one then backed it up with a 51.31 on day two for a second place 92.54 two-fish aggregate.

This was a big event for the Crikey team as they jumped from nineteenth place to tenth in the overall points race. Plus they have one zero in their six-fish aggregate that they will be able to make up this summer, putting them in a very good position.

Kim Bain Moore was the Pro event Top Lady Angler.

Jim Vaughan finds his Old Blue team in ninth overall in the standings after a great third place finish in the tournament. Vaughan, Scott Snively, Randy Keys, Mark Wilson, Stephanie Matlock, and Michael Fulgham, led the event after day one after scaling a superb 52.22. They backed it up on day two with a 38.81 for a 91.03 two-fish aggregate.

Jim never made it to the awards, however. He stopped me after weigh-in was over telling me that Randy would pick up their winnings. They were in the process of re-fueling and heading south to get in on the evening tuna bite. This is a fisherman who never quits!

Team Zebra, with David Tedder at the helm, took fourth with a 90.22 aggregate. Tedder, Jeff Smith, and Mike and Mark Kennedy scaled a nice 45.62 on day one and a 44.60 on day two.

Team Zebra moved from ninth to sixth in the overall picture and the next Pro event takes place close to his home waters. This could be the sleeper team of the season. They also have a zero, which occurred in Sarasota, so they are in a good position once they make up that weight.

Kwazar was fifth with an 88.40 aggregate. This is a team out of Mobile, Alabama and is regarded as one of the best ever from the upper Gulf. Marcus Kennedy, Brian Bailey, Brian Bailey Jr., Max Williams, and Robert (Billy) Young, were extremely consistent, weighing a 44.03 on day one, then scaling a 44.37 on day two for an 88.40 aggregate.

It should also be noted that this team weighed the largest Wahoo in the general tournament, an 81.79, plus took second in the Cobia division with a 44.15. A truly great weekend.!

Kwazar was fifth in the overall points race going into this event. They stayed in the same place but closed the gap in overall points.

Mark Henderson picked up sixth place with an 87.66 aggregate. The past Angler of the Year moved from eighteenth to eleventh overall. He and Joshua and Crockett Henderson weighed a 40.73 and a 44.99 for an 87.66 aggregate.

Crockett was the Pro event's Top Junior Angler again.

Lil Devil.com picked up seventh and moved up a notch. Michael Jacquin, Brian Beville, Chris Carter, and Christian Springsteen, scaled a 40.20 and a 44.99 for an 85.19 aggregate.

Rounding out eighth place was Bob Woithe's The Reel Won who, after this weekend, remained in fourth place in the overall picture. His team scaled a 42.12 and a 42.88. Bob's grandson, Rob, was again on the boat and was a big part of the team.

Overall observation would dictate a very tight race after three of the five events. Consistency is still important, but after Little River the points for the final event in Biloxi during Nationals week will change the race dramatically!

I would be amiss if I didn't acknowledge Stacy Wester's Big Bad Wolf team who remained in second place overall. While Kingpin literally wiped out an eight hundred-point deficit between them and Wester, he now returns to home waters where he should be able to stay in the hunt.

When you look at the overall standings you have to consider the teams with zeros. Take for instance Terry Grantham's My Three Sons who has 5097 points but has one zero to make up. If he does well in his one Wildcard event, the team moves up significantly.

It's not over till it's over and is still a very competitive event!
