SKA Teams Do Well at Pompano Beach’s Saltwater Shootout!
By Jack Holmes
Pompano Beach, Florida — SKA teams did very well at Jamie Bunn’s Saltwater Shootout. The event was new to the SKA, its Mercury Tournament Trail, and Division 10, but Bunn’s event has been produced for the past 14 years, and very successfully I might add. He’s the man in South Florida tournament circles.
However, before we get into the results portion of the coverage, you must understand the makeup of his events. They are the traditional meat fishing tournaments, wherefore king mackerel, tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and cobia are weighable species.
You are allowed to weigh up to four fish per specie, per team, however you cannot exceed ten fish overall per boat. The total weight of your ten fish determines the overall winner. However, his events are laced with all kinds of different categories, which make you think before you react. They are both challenging and fun!
Jamie produced a Division just for the SKA teams participating this year and called it Big Mack.
Here Michael and Lori Jacquin, and Mike, Mike Jr., and Chris Carter fishing the Yamaha powered Contender Lil’ Devil came out on top with a great 43.17. I had told them the night before that they were terribly past due. They responded and came through picking up a cool $2,500. Lori collected another $500 for capturing top honors in the Ladies Division, then they added another $1,755 for winning the Holy Mackerel Division. All in all a decent weekend for this great team!
The Outta Control II with Ralph Hawkins, John Passalacqua, and Angel Martinez, picked up second place in the same Division scaling a 42.81. The Mercury powered Sea Craft team got some great points, which moved them to sixth place in the Division standings plus got back $1,250. Add another $1,053 for second in the Holy Mackerel Division plus $500 for finishing 11th in the overall standings.
Chalk up a third place finish in the Big Mack category for Rich Sujat, Glenn Coleson, and Larry Guariniello fishing the Yamaha powered Contender, Lunasea. They scaled a 40.49, good for $750, then picked up another $400 for 13th place in the overall standings. Now add another $3,510 for a second place in the Big Three category. Lunasea is now third in the Division 10 standings.
See what I said. A lot of categories and which ones are you going to get into? As Jamie has his next SKA sanctioned event, the Saltwater Slam, coming on June 13th you need to go to his website and do your homework now otherwise you’ll leave money on the table. (http://www.bluewatermovements.com).
Keri-N-On was fourth in the Big Mack standings. Jason Naumann, Gill Strelec, and Andy Lemmel, fishing a Yamaha powered Contender, scaled a 40.04 and earned $750. They then took third in both the Big Three and the Holy Mackerel categories earning $3,042. Better yet, they jumped into the lead in the Division with a two fish aggregate of 89.89.
In the overall category for the top weight of the ten fish you’re putting on the scale, give Rich and Tyler Ebersold, Lance and Houston Irvine, Vinny Montella, and Hunter Hall a big slap on the back for putting the Dragon Bait / Stuff It II into fifth place with 170.73 points. They won $1,250 and Houston earned Top Junior Angler honors.
SKA members earned five of the top 15 in the overall category. We had 42 teams participate out of a field of 137 boats.
Jim Oliver, Peter Slack, and Cory Oliver, all new members, picked up seventh overall with 134.91 points. They fish the Shameless.
David Albritton, James Addison, and Anthony Oakes, picked up the final money slot in the overall weighing 115.02 pounds of fish. They fish the ProMarineUSA.com / Gatorfan, a Yamaha powered Contender.
In other “put in your memory bank” things, Tommy Tight won the Pee Wee division with 36.93 points. He fishes Off The Wall, a Mercury powered Contender.
The Lost Boys / Team AirTran had a good event earning second place in the Small Boat Division and fourth in the Average Joe Division with 93.64 points. They won $1,000. Their biggest king weighed 39.29 and moved to third place in the Class of 23 Division standings. Rich Cook and Mark Pernice fish a Yamaha powered Contender.
Dick Russell moved to the top of the Class standings thanks to their 31.39. He fishes the Brute Dusky 23.
Bar Fly scaled a 28.55 to give them second place in the Division 10 Open Class standings.
I would be amiss if I didn’t recognize Matthew Ivan on the Reel Blue who caught a Shootout record 58.83-pound king. Jamie told me this was a team who fished with him for many years and have never won a thing, that is till this weekend. The record king earned him $8,000. It was a spectacular fish! Sure would have liked to add that fish to our 50-pound club as it was the biggest we’ve seen all season.
Finally, Jamie’s team weighed over 5,000 pounds of fish and paid out $85,765. Kudos to them!
This was a great fun event. It took longer than expected to weigh in all the teams because of all the fish, but no one seemed to mind. It was a new experience loaded with excitement. Can’t wait for the next event!
A special thank you to Jamie and his staff for making our participation so enjoyable. This is a very good marriage for Division 10.
